A Liturgy Prayer for Starting Your Work Day

Jesus,

I do not take it for granted that I get to live this day, today. Perhaps it is even the most mundane day of my life, filled with the most repetitious and seemingly unimportant tasks imaginable. But this day is not like every other day to You. You have numbered it, given it, and graced it with Your presence. You have laid out all the good work that I will do today, Even before You laid the foundations of the world.

O God of creation, You introduce yourself to us as the God who works. When I gaze on the things your hands have done, indeed, how excellent they are! From the stars of the heavens to the depths of the ocean with all of its strange inhabitants, from the impressive mountains down to the tiniest fruit fly, You have made intricate, orderly, and stunning things. In all my dominion-taking today, help me to steward your creation and mimic your character as I create orderly and beautiful things.

Jesus, I wake each morning with a disordered and messy heart, One that wants to put self on the throne A heart that seeks its own interests, not the interests of your kingdom and the interests of my neighbor. I need to behold You, to see your beauty and glory and be transformed by them May my heart be so captivated with You that there is no room on the throne of my affections for another. Pass by me as I read Scripture and let me see your goodness today. I do not want to muscle my way through this day in my own strength. I want you to infuse all I do. Let me walk with you today like you walked with my first parents in the garden.

Let me live this day in the deep knowledge of your presence. As the branch can do nothing apart from the vine, I can do nothing apart from You. Teach me today what it means to live a rich and strong and embodied faith in my very mundane and earthy life. Help me to live moment-by-moment in the knowledge of your presence with me. Help me to work alongside you, enjoying your company, laughing, talking, asking you questions, Sharing joys and frustrations alike.

You have commanded me to “Go, drink your wine and eat your bread with a merry heart” because you have already approved of what I do. Free me from the chains of self-centeredness, pride, greed, and fear of others. Free me to live in joyful abandon, knowing that I am approved in Jesus, Loved and provided for as your beloved child, And set free to grow into the mature and capable vice-regent you designed me to be.
